The Color Green
Written by Ryan O’Harris
There are three types of people in the world: Those who believe the color of their skin is the most important thing, those that believe that the color of other people’s skin is the most important thing, and those who think the color of their skin is not the right color. I am here to let you know that all three types represent nothing but ignorance. The black man says that he deserves reparations for slavery, yet there are no former slaves living today. The white man says that we are being invaded by Mexicans, and they are destroying our way of life, yet it’s the white man that hires them to mow their lawns, clean their pools, pick their fruits and raise their children. The Mexican man says he just wants a better life for his family, but he ignores the millions of children starving in their own country. I’m a white person with a black child living in a green world, so green that if the color of your money and the amount are right, many will ignore the color of your child’s skin, so green that a 20 dollar bill in your pocket can mean the difference between spending a night in a hotel or spending a night in jail, so green that when your child needs pain medicine to counter the horrible effects of stomach cancer, his tears and screams measured only by the green you can put on the counter. I’m a white woman with a black child living in a green world, and I hate it!
